Sticking with the meta commentary on horror movies, Scream 2 opens on a preview evening of Stab, a film within a film telling the story of the first Scream. The release prompts a renewed interest in the Woodsboro Murders, and, after a couple are murdered, a media frenzy once again descends on Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell.
Hoping to just get on with her life, Sidney studies at Windsor College with her boyfriend Derek (Jerry O’Connell), his best friend Mickey (Timothy Olyphant) and fellow Woodsboro survivor Randy (Jamie Kennedy). Fate, alas, has other ideas, and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) is quick to chase Sidney down for her next big story – this time, to stage a confrontation between Sidney and Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber) – the man Sidney had sent to prison for the murder of her mother.
As the dreaded Ghostface once again unleashes hell on the campus, another old face appears – this time, Dewey (David Arquette). With the gang back together, the hunt for the identity of the Ghostface killer creates an atmosphere of suspicion and paranoia – causing friction amongst the group. This is particularly obvious with Sidney and Derek – poor, poor Derek. Eventually, the hunt leads to a big explosive ending with a not-such-a-surprising-twist in the final act.
There’s not much else left to say about Scream 2, if I’m honest. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I guess you’ll just have to go and see it yourself if you haven’t already. It’s a solid slasher film, if a little lacking in good characters, but it’s perfectly in tone with the first Scream. The relationship between Dewey and Gale kinda steals the show, mostly thanks to their on-screen chemistry – and awesome theme music.
Oh, and Scream 2 arguably features one of the most cringeworthy scenes I think I’ll see all month. Ugh. You know the one. When they’re in the canteen? And Derek starts singing? UGHHHHHH.
Anyway, as sequels go, it’s pretty good. Go watch it.
